Miss San Antonio Past Winners

The selection process to crown a Miss San Antonio has been transferred to many different organizations since 1923 and over the years the official list of past titleholders has been lost.  We are recompiling the official list with help from known former Miss San Antonio titleholders, newspaper archives and associated pageant websites like Miss Texas and Miss America.

Because the title "Miss San Antonio" has been used by many organizations over the years, the search is sometimes difficult to find titleholders in the America system.  The official list of former San Antonio area titleholders is slowly building.  Your help to find and/or correct our official list would be appreciated.  Please use our contact form to send any information on or official photos of former Miss San Antonio America titleholders.

We will incorporate your information once it has been verified.

2005

Miss San Antonio America 2005, (Research In Progress)

Research has turned up a potential candidate for Miss San Antonio 2005 but we have no confirmation.

Candidate: Elysia Petru
Page 1B - San Antonio Express-News - May 1, 2006

No Miss San Antonio participated at Miss Texas in 2005.  The Express-News article stated Miss Petru was Miss San Antonio 2005 and that she won the Miss San Antonio title in 2004 and would hold the title until 2006.  Most likely there was no Miss San Antonio selected in 2005.  Miss Petru held the 2004 title for two years but was not eligible to compete at Miss Texas for 2005.

1937 Pageant Fun Facts
Miss Texas 1937 was the first year the Miss Texas Organization sent a representative to the "Inter-City Beauty Pageant" in Atlantic City.  It wasn't until the 1964 that the national pageant required all of the national entries to be a state preliminary winner.  Before then many contestants competed with city titles along side contestants with state titles like Miss San Antonio with Miss Texas in 1937. Miss Fort Worth 1937, Alice Lucille Emerick, was crowned Miss Texas 1937 in the 1st Miss Texas Pageant held in August 1937.  Miss Emerick finished 1st runner-up in the Miss America Pageant. Miss America Miss Bertrand Island 1937, Betty Cooper, was crowned Miss America 1937 during the 11th Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Pageant) was held at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 11, 1937. Other Facts If the current process was in-place to award the 1st runner-up the crown should Miss America could not complete her reign, Miss Texas 1937, Alice Emerick would have been Miss America 1937.

Miss San Antonio America 1933, Billie Elwood

Local Pageant Information:
(Research In Progress)

Profile:
* The Miss San Antonio 1933 title is filled with controversy.

Articles show the Retail Grocers Association held a beauty pageant in the Aztec Theater during their annual conversion and the national winner would move on to the Miss America Pageant on September 5-9, 1933.  There is no evidence that the winner attended the Miss America Pageant.  The few articles referencing the Miss America Pageant as the final destination for their national winner must have been incorrect and the Grocers' competition was not associated with the Miss America system.

There is no evidence that Miss Billie Elwood held the Miss San Antonio 1933 title, however, articles show Miss Billie Elwood as "Miss Texas" in 1933 and since she was listed as being from San Antonio it is assumed that she was Miss San Antonio in 1933.  She was Miss San Antonio 1932 in a different pageant system.

The controversy peaks with a photograph showing Miss Elwood as "Miss Texas" alongside "Miss Oklahoma", "Miss Kansas" and "Miss Missouri" christening a train car at the St. Louis Union Station while en route to Atlantic City to participate in the Miss America Pageant in 1933.

Miss Texas, Billie Elwood, did not participate in the 1933 Miss America Pageant.  An official panoramic photograph of the Miss America contestants shows "Miss Kansas" and "Miss Missouri" but not "Miss Oklahoma" or "Miss Texas."  "Miss Oklahoma" withdrew to undergo an emergency appendectomy and supposedly Miss Billie Elwood learned that the "Miss Texas" title bestowed on her by a questionable pageant promotional director was irregular and, on her own accord, returned home without participating in the Miss America Pageant.

It's highly unlikely that the promotional director randomly chose Miss Elwood as "Miss Texas."  There is no evidence of a local competition being held for Miss San Antonio America 1933 so we are assuming she was chosen because she previously held the Miss San Antonio title in 1932 in another pageant system.

Because there were no other names associated with San Antonio or Texas involving Miss America in 1933, Miss Elwood is our prime candidate as Miss San Antonio America 1933.

Miss Elwood (Mrs. Weinbrenner) later joined the U.S. Army in 1956 and retired a Major after 20 years of service in the WAC (Women's Army Corps).

1928 - 1932

The national pageant was canceled from 1928 throught 1932.  We are assuming there was no Miss San Antonio America during this time period.
1928-1932 Pageant Fun Facts
Miss America The "Inter-City Beauty Pageant" was canceled from 1928 through 1932 due to criticism from local religious and women's groups.  We are assuming there was no Miss San Antonio during this time period. Other Facts In 1928, Chicago staged a pageant claiming to be the "Miss America Pageant" which moved from Atlantic City, New Jersey. In 1929, Baltimore staged a pageant claiming to be the "Miss America Pageant." In 1930, Miami Beach staged a pageant claiming to be the "Miss America Pageant." In 1931, Wildwood, New Jersey staged a pageant claiming to be the "Miss America Pageant." None of these pageants were associated with the official "Inter-City Beauty Pageant" from Atlantic City, New Jersey.  Winners of these pageant are not included in the official history of the Miss America Pageant.

1927

Miss San Antonio America 1927, Florence Zoeller

Local Pageant Information:
Magestic Theater, San Antonio, TX
May 16-19, 1927

Profile:
In 1927 the title of "Miss San Antonio" was given to at least three different individuals.  Miss Lucille Klaus was Miss San Antonio for a vaudeville tour ironically titled "Miss America" which caused confusion verifying Miss San Antonio America 1927.  Miss Norma Nelson was given the title of Miss San Antonio in the First Annual LaSalle Pageant.  Miss Florence Zoeller won the title of Miss San Antonio for the "International Pageant of Pulchritude" in Galveston, Texas.

Because the Galveston pageant was original associated with the Inter-City Pageant in Atlantic City (Miss America) and because Miss Dallas who competed along with Miss Zoeller finished in second place in the Inter-City Pageant, Miss Zoeller would most likely be the official Miss San Antonio America in 1927.

Miss Florence Zoeller did not compete at the Inter-City Pageant in Atlantic City.

Empire Theater, San Antonio, TX
May 3, 1926

Profile:
* Extrapolated from limited information.

1926 was a confusing year for the Inter-City Pageant system in Texas.  The previous two years had a regional "Bathing Beauty Pageant" held in Galveston where the top three won a trip to Atlantic City for the national pageant.  In 1926 this regional pageant became the new "International Pageant of Pulchritude" which was a national pageant open to contestants around the world.  The winner(s) no longer won a trip to Atlantic City but instead because the queen of the new international pageant.

Miss Dallas, Rosebud Blondell, who finished in twelfth place in the 1926 Galveston Revue competed in Atlantic City as Miss Dallas most likely paying her own way or received funding from her city for the trip to Atlantic City.  This would imply there was some type residual association between the Galveston Revue and the Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Pageant).  Because of this we are considering the Galveston pageant contestants as official Miss America contestants.

The selection of Miss San Antonio for the "Seventh Annual Bathing Beauty Pageant" in Galveston was held on May 3, 1926 at the Empire Theater.  No articles have been found on a winner but Miss Leta Beazley is listed as having competed as Miss San Antonio at the "Seventh Annual Bathing Girl Revue" on May 17, 1926.

Miss Leta Beazley did not compete in the Inter-City Pageant in Alantic City.

Miss San Antonio America 1925, Virginia Wheat

Pageant Information:
Empire Theater, San Antonio, TX
May 11-15, 1925

Profile:
Two events to select a Miss San Antonio 1925 have been found but only one has a Miss San Antonio at the event.

Miss Virginia Wheat was selected as Miss San Antonio 1925 during the Empire-Blum's Bathing Beauty Review at the Empire Theater on May 15, 1925.  Miss Wheat was one of two individuals from San Antonio to compete in the annual Galveston pageant for a chance to win a trip to Atlantic City.

A second, earlier selection event was a Bathing Revue during the Water Carnival held at San Pedro Park on April 25, 1925.  No articles have been found on the Miss San Antonio winner at the Water Carnival.

The two contestants from San Antonio who competed in the annual Galveston Revue have been consistently listed as Miss San Antonio, Virgina Wheat and Pearl Moses from San Antonio.  It is possible Miss Moses was the winner of the Water Carnival Revue.  Based on available documentation Miss San Antonio America 1925 was Miss Virginia Wheat.

Miss Virginia Wheat and Miss Pearl Moses did not compete in the Inter-City Beauty Pageant in Atlantic City.

Pageant Fun Facts 1925
Regional Pageant The 6th Annual Bathing Girl Revue in Gaveston, TX was held on May 18, 1925.  It was not required to win this pageant in order to participate in the Inter-City Beauty Pageant in Atlantic City.  More than likely this regional pageant was used to consolidate the cost of sending contestants to Atlantic City.  The Bathing Girl Revue awarded the top three winners a trip to Atlantic City for the Inter-City Beauty Pageant.  The winners were Miss Dallas, Miss Galveston and Miss Houston. Miss America Miss California 1925, Fay Lanphier, was crowned Miss America 1925 during the 5th Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Pageant) was held at the Million Dollar Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 11, 1925.  She was the first winner to have represented an entire state. Miss America 1924 decided not to defend her title due to her belief that professionals were entering the competition for a Hollywood film New Pageant Rule Future Miss America winners will not be eligible to return to defend her title.

Palace Theater, San Antonio, TX
May 1924

Profile:
* Extrapolated from limited information.

A Bathing Revue to select Miss San Antonio for the annual Galveston Bathing Competition was held in the Palace Theater in May 1924.  No information on a winner of the revue has been located however Miss Eileen Henry is listed in many articles as Miss San Antonio competing along side three other representives from San Antonio in Galveston, Texas.

Miss Katherine Hensley, Miss San Antonio 1923, was one of the other entries from San Antonio competing in the Galveston competition however Miss Hensley is never listed as "Miss San Antonio."

Miss Katherine Hensley finished in third place in the Galveston competition and won $100 and the trip to Atlantic City.  We are assuming she represented the city and was awarded the "Miss San Antonio" title while competing in the Inter-City Beauty Pageant.

1924 Pageant Fun Facts
Regional Pageant The 5th Annual Bathing Girl Revue in Gaveston, Texas was held on May 18, 1925.  Before 1924 this pageant was not associated with the Inter-City Beauty Pageant.  In 1925, while still not officially associated with the Inter-City Beauty Pageant, the award given to the top three winners was a trip to Atlantic City to compete in the Inter-City Beauty Pageant.  It was not required to win this pageant in order to compete in the Inter-City Beauty Pageant in Atlantic City.  The winners were Miss Dallas, Miss Galveston and Miss Houston. Miss America Miss Philadelphia 1924, Ruth Malcomson, was crowned Miss America during the 4th Miss America Pageant (Inter-City Beauty Pageant) was held at the Million Dollar Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 6, 1924. Other Facts Mary Katherine Campbell, Miss America 1922 & 1923, competed for a third time and was 1st runner-up. The 1924 Miss America Pageant had 83 entrants which is the largest number of contestants in Miss America history.  This is because entries were allowed from cities instead of states as is currently required.

Miss San Antonio America 1923, Katherine Willie Hensley

Local Pageant Information:
No Pageant Held
Judging Date: Tuesday, August 21, 1923
Organized by San Antonio Express Newspaper

Profile:
The San Antonio Express Newspaper invited all beautiful girls in San Antonio to submit a photo of themselves.  A panel of five judges chose twenty-five individuals to interview on Tuesday, August 21, 1923.  Katherine Hensley was chosen as the first Miss San Antonio to compete at the Inter-City Beauty Contest in Atlantic City, New Jersey with girls from ninety-nine other contestants from select cities in the United States and Canada.

After a newspaper ad was released to raise funds for her trip to the National Pageant, San Antonio united and donations flooded in from businesses and individuals.  Miss Hensley boarded a Pullman coach at the M.K.&T. train station with her chaperon for the trip to Atlantic City.

Miss Hensley also competed and won a regional pageant held in Galveston, Texas in 1924.  Her award was a trip to compete in the Inter-City Beauty Contest in Atlantic City.  She did not hold the title of Miss San Antonio 1924 until she competed in Atlantic City.

Family lore had it that Miss Hensley won the "Miss Texas" title twice.  This would be true if the Atlantic City Pageant (Miss America) held preliminary state competitions as they do today.  However in the early years, contestants competed with a city title or state title.  In 1924, three individuals from Texas competed in Atlantic City; Miss Beaumont, Miss Dallas and Miss Hensley as Miss San Antonio.  There was no official "Miss Texas" until 1936.

Other Facts The original name of the Miss America Pageant was the "Inter-City Beauty Contest" started in 1921.
